Williamsburg High Student:  Life Is Going To The Dogs
Nanci Young, The Workplace Learning Connection

Dustie Cronbaugh from Williamsburg High loves animals. So, she decided to learn more about veterinary careers on November 23, 2009 as part of a group job shadow coordinated by the Workplace Learning Connection. Dustie, along with 20 other teens from 9 area high schools spent part of the day with a current veterinary student at Iowa State University. While Dustie examined animal bones, she found out about the things she could be doing in high school to pave the way for the upcoming eight years of college required for this field. Cronbaugh also went to Bright Eyes and Bushy Tails Veterinary Hospital to view their ICU, surgical, dental, and rehabilitation areas. While there, she was able to observe a dog do physical therapy on an aquatic treadmill and view a recently removed dog spleen. This is the kind of work-based learning you can’t do in a high school classroom! Practicing veterinarians earn an average of $79,000 a year and the field is becoming more and more specialized.   To learn more about this career and others, check with the high school guidance office or go to www.workplace-learning.org to find out more.

What can families, students, and school personnel do to keep from getting sick and spreading flu?

Families, students, and school staff can keep from getting sick with flu in three ways:

  • Practicing good hand hygiene. Students and staff members should wash their hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
  • Practicing respiratory etiquette. The main way that the flu spreads is from person to person in the droplets produced by coughs and sneezes, so it’s important to cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your elbow or shoulder, not into your hands.
  • Staying home if you’re sick. Keeping sick students at home means that they keep their viruses to themselves rather than sharing them with others.

Students, staff, and their families must take personal responsibility for helping to slow the spread of the virus by practicing these steps to keep from getting sick with flu and protecting others from getting the flu. Signs and Symptoms of Influenza: Fever (100 degrees Fahrenheit, 37.8 degrees Celsius of greater), cough, sore throat, a runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, and feeling very tired. Children must be 24 hours fever-free before returning to school. Physicians ask that if your child have symptoms of Influenza to call their office.
