What can families, students, and school personnel do to keep from getting sick and spreading flu?

Williamsburg Community Schools has two High School students home with confirmed cases of Influenza A. As you may know, flu can be easily spread from person to person. Families, students, and school staff can keep from getting sick with flu in three ways:

  • Practicing good hand hygiene. Students and staff members should wash their hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
  • Practicing respiratory etiquette. The main way that the flu spreads is from person to person in the droplets produced by coughs and sneezes, so it’s important to cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your elbow or shoulder, not into your hands.
  • Staying home if you’re sick. Keeping sick students at home means that they keep their viruses to themselves rather than sharing them with others.

Students, staff, and their families must take personal responsibility for helping to slow the spread of the virus by practicing these steps to keep from getting sick with flu and protecting others from getting the flu.

Signs and Symptoms of Influenza: Fever (100 degrees Fahrenheit, 37.8 degrees Celsius of greater), cough, sore throat, a runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, and feeling very tired. Children must be 24 hours fever-free before returning to school. Physicians ask that if your child have symptoms of Influenza to call their office.

Weather policies and cancellation notices

The Williamsburg School District has signed up to take part in a notification system offered by the State of Iowa called “Iowa School Alerts.” This program gives parents, the media, and others the opportunity to sign up to receive e-mail notifications directly when we have cancelled classes, or will be dismissing early or starting late due to weather and other factors. This service, which was developed by IT staff at the Department of Administrative Services, is free of charge to you and the school. Click here for more information on the service and sign-up instructions.
